Academy Award 1945 (Best Documentary, Features) "The Fighting Lady," a portrait of life on an aircraft carrier of World War II, a ship that is "enormous, wonderful, and strange to us." After profiling the various activities of the day and soldiers after the journey through the Panama Canal, the film takes the audience through a litany of real combat operations. The Fighting Lady takes part in a strike on Marcus Island, then defends himself against a night surpriseAttack of the Japanese fighters. Some of the photographs come from cameras set up in the cockpit of American planes and shows first-hand how it is possible that diving through enemy anti-aircraft fire. The film culminates in a major confrontation with the Imperial Japanese Navy battle. In this massive operation, later dubbed the "Marianas Turkey Shoot" American pilot shot down nearly four Japanese Zero, and only 22 losses are incurred.
